Homework for protect project

I created three drawings that showed environmental concerns. I found drawing them in red to be quite effective because the drawings stood out and it showed the danger of continuing to live how we do and the dangers for the environment. It was also fun travelling around to different areas and seeing some areas super clean without any plastic waste and some super cluttered with plastic, so I thought it was a good experience and I can use it in my protect project.

Day one of protect project

The first day of design was quite challenging but exciting at the same time. I didn't expect to work in a group I thought it would be individual work, but I found working in a group to be fun because usually I work alone. I found it nice to split areas to each person so that we would all be contributing. Our area to research was the Russell Glacier in Greenland. From my research, due to all the animals becoming endangered due to the ice melting I've been inspired to make a huge textile piece with my group in relation to the ice melting in the Glacier and to show what the Glacier is going through. I am going to do an abstract piece in response to the problems of the Glacier and using my homework research from travelling around different areas of London to show how the world is in danger.

I am interested in highlighting the problems of the Glacier to create an emotional response rather than thinking of solutions. For example Leonardo da Vinci did drawings of him setting free caged animals such as birds which provokes an emotional response to the onlooker which is what I want to achieve.

We as a group started making a small textile tapestry, which will eventually develop into a textile model. I am excited to make it bigger because we didn't have enough time to. I think it will be more effective bigger.

day 2 textiles day

This whole day was about experimenting with different materials, processes and exploring with your mind which I thought was exciting. I found the whole day fun and I enjoyed it much more than the first day because it was more individual work which is what I'm used to and more comfortable with. I also found the tasks such as close your eyes and draw really interesting and I thought it was really communicative. I enjoyed the drawing and collage aspect so much more than on day one where we sewed, it was more my style. I liked how quick the tasks were because usually I work on something for a long time period, so I thought it was cool to do a different process. The tasks were about working with your imagination and communicating your ideas that way, which will be useful in making the model of the Glacier in my group. After we finished with the drawing tasks, we moved on to making mini textile responses which I found difficult at first. I found it easier when we had the time limit and had to work quickly, because you didn't have to think about what you were doing, but with this task it was longer and with a material I'm not used to. I found the layout hard in my first attempt in translating my word into a textile piece. I had to figure out which colours go together and re-arrange the layout a couple of times before I was happy. In my second collage I realise I was thinking too much about an idea and just decided to make a quick collage without thinking much on how I was going to arrange everything. I found this to be easier and my response was much better.

Day 4 theatre, props

We started off re arranging words from our articles and making stories out of them which was interesting due to the playfulness of it. After that we moved on to the making of masks based on our word play and our environmental place. We had to create a character for this mask. I found this the most challenging task yet. For me it was so difficult to create a character for a mask and actually make a mask that reflected this character and their story. When I spoke to someone about the mask idea for help they said to make a mask that provoked an emotion in relation to my article and to play with it more, so for my second attempt at making a mask I used different colours but I still found it difficult to convey my message which was of anger about the endangered animals, through my mask and to envision a character. So in future I will try to do a mini mind map of what I want to create and what I want my character to be like.

Day 5 and 6collaborative ideas and project making

Our teacher suggested that we make our glacier model into a walk- in like structure which we thought was really good. Adding to that idea we thought it would be interesting to incorporate sound and lights into the glacier structure. At first it was hard working as a group because everyone else seemed so skilled with sewing and making the base of the structure, so I felt a bit out of my comfort zone at first, but then I decided to just focus on my own individual section so that everyone could eventually see their sections together. I also found it a little difficult to sew quickly in a time limit, so my stitches were quite untidy but I think it still looked good because it did not have to be neat. Once we had made the base for the structure it was easy from there to just put all the pieces together and then get the atmosphere of the inside to be chilly. At this point it was easier working in a group because I felt more confident in what I was doing and I liked how different people's sections were in the textile. Overall, the final outcome of the glacier communicated the message well. It showed the effect of climate change, how it is damaging the glacier. The warm tones of the lighting inside provoked a chilled atmosphere and the sounds of the ice in the glacier made the place come alive.
